What is agentic commerce?

Part of the Agentic Finance Index knowledge base · Updated 2026-07-20

Agentic commerce is commerce conducted by an AI agent on a person's or business's behalf — the agent finds the product, compares options, assembles the cart, and completes checkout. The human sets intent and limits; the agent executes the transaction.

Commerce vs payments

The terms get conflated. Agentic payments is the settlement layer — how money moves when an agent pays (see our explainer). Agentic commerce is the full shopping flow above it: discovery, decision, checkout. A single agent purchase involves both.

The enabling rails

Three tracks converged in 2025–26: ACP (Stripe/OpenAI) standardizes checkout inside chat assistants; Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce give agents tokenized, scoped card credentials with controls; and for machine-sized purchases, x402 settles in stablecoins.

Why merchants care

When assistants execute purchases, the merchant who is agent-purchasable wins the sale — catalog integration, machine-readable pricing, and standards support become distribution. The consensus split holds: cards for what humans buy through agents, stablecoins for what machines buy for themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is agentic commerce live today?

Yes, in early form: checkout inside major chat assistants via ACP, and card-network agent credentials rolling out through Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce.

Do consumers lose protection when an agent buys for them?

Card-rail purchases keep standard consumer protections; emerging mandate standards (Google's AP2) add cryptographic proof of what the agent was authorized to do.

How is agentic commerce different from a shopping bot?

Scope and authority: an agent holds delegated purchasing authority with limits and completes real checkouts, rather than just alerting a human to act.
